New Zealand (Auckland): Visa Requirements and General Information
You do not need a work visa or permit to work in New Zealand if you are:
a New Zealand citizen or you hold a New Zealand residence permit, or
an Australian citizen, or the holder of a current Australian permanent residence visa including a current Australian resident return visa. (If there are conditions on your residence visa/resident return visa, then you will require a work visa.)
There are a number of requirements that all applicants need to meet for a temporary work visa or permit.
To enter New Zealand you must:
be in good health and of good character, and
have a passport that is valid for at least three months past the date you are to leave New Zealand, and
be genuine in wanting to work in New Zealand, and
have the right visa for your visit.
As well as meeting the requirements for all applicants, you must meet the requirements of the policy under which you are applying for a temporary work visa or permit.
You may be eligible for a temporary work visa and/or permit if:
you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer
there is a specific purpose or event for which you need to come to New Zealand to work
you are a student or trainee who wants to work here, or
you want to join your partner here and work.
As well as meeting the requirements for all applicants, you must meet the requirements of the policy under which you are applying for a temporary work visa or permit.
If you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer and do not fall under one of the policies for specialist workers, you may apply under the Essential Skills work policy. The employer will need to show that no New Zealand citizens or residents are available to do the job.
Essential Skills work visas and/or permits will usually be issued with a maximum duration of three years where an applicants job offer is for an occupation classified as an ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) Skill Level 1, 2 or 3. However, there is a special policy allowing a visa and permit of up to five years if:
your New Zealand job offer is for a position which is classified as skill level one on the ANZSCO
your base salary is at least $55,000
You may only obtain a five year visa and permit once, however if you wish to continue working, and still meet the requirements of Essential Skills work policy, you may apply as normal for a visa and/or permit with a three year maximum duration.
Visas and/or permits for successful applicants whose application is based on an employment offer for an occupation classified as ANZSCO Skill Level 4 or 5 will be granted for a maximum duration of one year.
