Dubai Jobs Market Update

Dubai Jobs Market Update - Dubai dusts itself off??

Whilst the global economic climate has had a disastrous effect upon the Dubai property bubble, there could be sunshine over the desert horizon in the Middle East finance and media sectors.

The Financial Times has reported news of Goldman Sachs starting an ‘aggressive recruitment drive across all regions’ with a view to placing 200 new staff members within asset and fund management.

This news comes on the same day that financial newswire Bloomberg reveal that they are planning to almost double its Dubai jobs workforce to 90 over the next year and increase its terminals by at least 2 percent this year, a sign the region's banking and finance sectors are headed toward better health.

"The pipeline is healthier today. Removals are down as a result of stabilising head counts (at banks). The prospect pipeline is starting to grow again. (Banks are) taking on a more welcoming attitude toward the future," Bloomberg Chairman Peter Grauer was quoted as saying by UAE daily the National on Monday.

Dubai is Bloomberg's 10th regional hub, alongside its headquarters in New York and other regional offices including London, San Francisco, Sao Paulo and Tokyo.

Recruitment in Dubai has also just taken a positive turn on a practical level with the opening of the city’s eagerly awaited metro system. Figures from Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) show an average of 50,000 people have been using the trains every day and a trip along the Red Line shows there is a wide range of commuters using the service. Students are taking the metro to college, businessmen are heading to and from the Dubai International Finance Centre station for ease, and retail workers can commute more cheaply and efficiently directly to their outlets.

Whilst there is no magic wand being waved over the Middle East, it seems to be fundamentally accepted, even across the areas economic sceptics, that the Middle East is better placed to weather the recession better than other areas. As a regional hub of construction industry, retail, sales, hospitality and media. Anybody put of looking at jobs in Dubai for a career change, may well find things are looking distinctly sunnier than they were a year ago.
