International OpportunitiesGetting an overseas job is always a golden opportunity, whether you have the vision of working on a foreign economy or pursuing a career from a foreign study. It’s not only the traveling that attracts individuals; it’s also the thought of diversity in people, culture, and opportunities that inspires you to want to grab that opportunity abroad. But remember, starting an international career, is never a smooth road.

Those who have lived the successful expat life abroad have a few things in common: a genuine college degree, years of experience, and endless perseverance. Of course I won’t let my article end on those 3 denominators.

There are also these aspects which I would like to share to jumpstart your overseas careers:

  1. Do Your Homework and Get the Inside Scoop – Don’t go into the battlefield blind. Research for any useful information that you need be it visa requirements, labor laws, cost of living expenses, working environment, culture, local places, or even food. It may not give you a crystal clear view of what to expect but at least you have the idea of what it is like to live and work in the country of your choice.
  2. If you can, pursue further education abroad – Whether you decide on starting a new course or pursuing masters in whatever field, an education abroad gives you that significant edge in your international job search. Sometimes employers and recruiters place a significant weight if you have a degree or a certificate from a local institution or university.
  3. There is such a thing as a RESUME. Make it Right! – Your Resume will probably your magic wand towards successful job hunting. Don’t forget tips on making great resumes. Tailor your resume according to the post you’re applying for and remember to include goals that you have achieved in past experiences, these will be goldmines in the eyes of recruiters.
  4. Engage in People – There will always be that someone who has that international experience or someone who has several contacts in the country you desire to work in. Talk to people and network as much as possible. Sometimes the great opportunities are not advertised as usual, but are only relayed to those who are direly interested.
  5. I’ll have to repeat PERSEVERANCE! – As I have mentioned, starting an international career, is never a smooth road to travel. So don’t give up on the first try. Try to get local contacts, polish your resume, learn a new skill, whatever it is try harder until you have grab that opportunity that you’re waiting for.
