Zurich - the Ultimate Place to live

Zurich: Visa and General Information

Switzerland does not use the term “work permit” as such. The Residence Permit is a combination of both a residence and a work permit, entitling the holder to live in a particular Canton and work for a specified employer.

Switzerland has entered into agreements with the European Union (EU) concerning immigration and employment even though it is not a member of the EU. Nationals of EU member countries can live, work and study in Switzerland with little difficulty.

TYPES OF PERMIT

Standard 1 year permit (B Permit)
For a specific job, valid for a limited period, usually one-year, and renewable.

Obtaining a B Permit takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks. The prospective employer in Switzerland must apply to the Cantonal Aliens Police for a WORK PERMIT for the foreign national. If such a permit is granted, then an “Assurance of a Residence Permit” is sent to the employee's address outside Switzerland.

Nationals who require a visa to work in Switzerland (most non-Europeans) must make a personal application at an Embassy or Consulate for the work-visa at the same time as the employer applies for the Work Permit in Switzerland. An authorization to issue the visa is sent to the appropriate Swiss Embassy / Consulate after the Work Permit has been granted.
